More details about the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman have emerged, with several news outlets reporting that a large amount of heroin and other drug paraphernalia was found in his New York City apartment.
Hoffman's body was discovered in the apartment Sunday morning, and law enforcement officials told CNN that a needle was sticking out of his left arm. A heroin overdose is the suspected cause of death; a medical examiner has planned an autopsy for today.
Also found in Hoffman's apartment were nearly 50 envelopes of what is believed to be heroin, more than 20 used syringes, and a number of prescription drugs, including one used for addiction treatment.
CNN reports that police are currently trying to piece together what happened between 8 p.m. Saturday, the last time Hoffman was seen alive, and 11:15 a.m. Sunday, when his body was found by two friends. Authorities hope to learn if anyone was with Hoffman at the time he died, and they also want to track down his drug dealer.
Hoffman was open about his struggles with drug addiction in the past, which began when he was in his 20s. He had been clean for more than 20 years before relapsing in 2012, and spent time in rehab last May.
"I saw him last week, and he was clean and sober, his old self," said David Bar Katz, Hoffman's friend and the one who discovered his body and called 911, told the New York Times. "I really thought this chapter was over."
Hoffman is survived by his longtime partner, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children.
